About the Incredibly Interesting Powell River December 13, 2007

Dennis @

When the ice caps melt and oceans rise, when tidal waves roll in and people roll out, Powell River, BC, Canada, is the place to be. It’s on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and Vancouver Island, with its mountains in the backgound, sits just across the Straight, over to Comox and Courtenay. And speaking of mountains, Pamela Anderson grew up in that area. (One small, immature little comment here: Imagine being one of the guys in school with Pamela and going to drunken high school parties with her!)

But back to Powell River. One can grow certain types of palm trees here. The odd whale swims by. We can view Pamela Anderson’s mountains every day. The local senior hockey team is a perennial Allan Cup threat. The junior team, the Kings, will someday win big and you should be here to see it. We have a new Staples, several dollar stores,  and the rumour of a Tim Horton’s coming. The mayor thinks he’s Winston Churchill ,and bluesman Colin James comes here from time to time. And most importantly, like I said earlier, we’ll be safe from rising seas and tidal waves. (Except, of course, those who live down below, close to the water, who will be swept out to sea kicking and screaming, like Sandy and Lawrence.)

It’s really, really nice here, so break the news to your partner, hold a garage sale, throw your mattress in a truck, say goodbye to your lousy, pathetic old life, and move here! Everyone’s welcome, even Habs haters, Leaf fans, and those who still like George Bush and Gordon Campbell. We have, however, enough Vancouver Canucks fans already.)

    GREAT NEWS DENNIS,
You have been elected to the post of President of thePowell River Habs Supporters Club.
    Your duties are as follows:=
1)To ride beside the Mayor in the Seafair Parade.
    2) To invite all current, used to be and maybe Habs fans to a Barbeque at your place at the end of the n.h.l. season.
    3) To wear Canucks colours during Seafair. In the interests of sportsmanship and to set an example to the youth of the town.

The mayor, His Worship Sir Winston Churchill, might not even know who the Rocket is. So that’s a problem.
If all the Habs fans came to a BBQ at my house, there would be no parking available for blocks around.
I can do a lot of things. I can maybe eat worms if I had to. I could clean the bottoms of outhouses. I could maybe join the Polar Bear Club.
But please don’t ask me to wear a Canucks jersey. That’s asking way too much. There’s just some things I simply can’t do.

    Hey Dennis,

Your right. It is really nice here. I often call it our little piece of paradise. It is coming up on ten years since we discovered the beauty of Powell River and the nature that surrounds us. We came up here to look around on a beautiful sunny day at the end of June and fell in love with the area. We went back to Vancouver, quit our jobs and moved up here at the beginning of August. Great move and definitely would do it again. It sure beats hustle and bustle of the big cities of Vancouver and Toronto where I lived for many years. And, it has the small town friendliness like where I grew up in Saskatchewan (now that’s a hockey province). Anyone wanting to cash out of the big city or retire from the cold of the rest of the country would be very wise to make the move to The Pearl On The Sunshine Coast.

Keep up the good work on this fun site. You are in your element.

    Cheers,
    Robin

I see you all love the Leafs? ;)

Timmy Ho’s… we have many many Tim Horton’s here in WNY! At least he’s much better tasting than Dunkin’ Doughnuts. Added bonus: no Rachel Ray “deliiiish” commercials.
